I had a business colleague ask me how things were this morning – and I surprised myself with the answer: business for me is rather good these days. I suspect it is a combination of a few things.
First, I work with small, nimble businesses that are quite specialized in their offerings. And I think that it is through such specialization that some clients depend on these firms because in tough times these firms can be flexible, nimble and fully trustworthy to make sure every dime spent is worthwhile.
Second, this financial circus is proving that business is very much about relationships. Those with whom we have deeper relationships are either continuing business as before or giving us straight answers as to what is going on. Other potential clients seem to be dancing in circles as their “vendor-as-commodity” model has them looking for something cheaper without regard to quality or integrity. It is fascinating to watch.
As one of my clients put it – “wow, we’re quickly learning who our true friends are.”
