My business is completely based on relationships. And in order to build and maintain such relationships, I have to stay completely organized so information that I need is ready-at-hand.
My family and friends have long teased me for the fact that much of my information on people (i.e. contact info, skill-sets/expertise, birthdays, spouse’s name) is not in my head – I use technology as a supplement to my own memory. Am I cheating a little? Perhaps. But if I need to quickly find things like 1) a graphic designer with experience in museums, 2) a large meeting venue in New Orleans, 3) the code behind “that new CMS software” or 4) the name of ____’s mom – I got it. Technology has enabled me to build my ideal, personal resource database.
Its been even more fun with this technology over the past year. The Virgo in me gets excited about efficiencies. For example – its amazing how the web has recently enabled the means to use software virtually instead on native on your computer. You can now use “cloud computing” for your email, address book, calendar, documents, photos, videos, and work-flow. Nothing is stored on your computer. It is ALL stored on the web for fast, easy access. As part of this movement, computer manufacturers are now even producing netbooks (think very fast, mini-laptop computers intended to work quickly on the web while not storing much locally).
I sense we’re closer than we think to having holographic interfaces and a terabyte chip in our heads. There are definitely some nights I could use the RAM upgrade.
