read between the glyphs

by t on March 21, 2006

Design snobs unite! My design education came from working here and taking a class here. Aquent had a robust “boot camp” back then, where promising agents were shuttled off to Boston for a whirlwind two weeks where they beat good taste into you. We debated what was cool, from photography to websites to fonts…

A former AD from Addison and VCG, my friend Michelle recently bestowed her wisdom on font foundries. Foundries are design houses that work exclusively on typefaces, also known as fonts. I’ve been a reader of Communication Arts, How, Print and other publications for some time, but never have I seen such attention to detail – where the words themselves are meticulously designed.

Michelle’s top-4 foundries (should you seek to preview or purchase) are Adobe, Linotype, House Industries and Emigre. The former two are a bit more commercial and well-known. The latter two are younger and “edgier.”
