As a close friend of mine once said of his morning coffee, “If I can’t live without something, does that mean I’m addicted to it?”
Speaking of personal addictions… since late April, the back page of the The New Yorker magazine has held a contest to write the tagline for a given cartoon. Piggybacking on the popularity of their famous on-staff cartoonists who pump-out dozens of cartoons a week (and a brilliant coffee-table book retrospective, here), the page features a new cartoon every week for which you can submit your most witty punchline. The magazine selects three finalists, and then the web-savvy public votes on the winner – who receives a framed, signed copy of the cartoon.
So, you need not be a subscriber to join in! The contest has us submitting captions through every old email address we own. Frankly, we’re not always impressed with the judges’ finalists. We hope to soon have our name in lights as legit funny people.

“Humor is the great thing, the saving thing. The minute it crops up, all our irritations and resentments slip away and a sunny spirit takes their place.” ~ Mark Twain
