design pimps

by t on February 11, 2008

[As sent via email to a designer in NOLA looking to move to NYC. "I love design and would like to work in the theatre. Where do I apply?"]

The top firms in town delivering graphic design for Broadway are Serino Coyne , Eliran Murphy and SpotCo . They are all here in town and are the only firms who specialize in the Broadway/Theater.

Regarding graphic design for television (or "broadcast" as they call it here) – what exactly do you mean? Graphic design to me is often "static" and represents work driving the print and outdoor mediums. Do you want to work directly for one of the big TV media outlets? Or an ad agency, boutique video design firm or "post" house? If you mean video design or motion graphics, I might suggest you explore some a motion graphics industry site, like Justin Cone’s Motionographer .

To get in, I might suggest that you first try to see if there are postings on the firms’ sites themselves and apply, using a web portfolio of your own. Next, I would try a recruiter. The best in town include Roz Goldfarb (who placed me once), Aquent (where I worked for 4 years), HeldLloyd , or RitaSue Siegel (where a very close friend works)… and here is a recent article on others.
