Fax machines. You go through the hassel of ordering an extra, dedicated phone line. You buy the fax machine. Sometimes, you have to buy special paper. You print the darn number on your updated business card. All for a technology that, frankly, is a very out-dated. But here’s one way that faxes may simplify your life… check out eFax.
Fax to and from your computer, anytime. This is a simple software that creates proprietary PDFs (um.. pictures, Mum) of files. Register for a local number, and anything faxed to that number comes into your email in-box as an eFax file. You can also fax any document on your computer.
Added bonus: I use eFax to digitze old paper files. I use another fax machine (at work, or a friend) to send the documents to my eFax number, open each eFax file in its application, and then either print-to, or save-as, a PDF. This requires that you either have Mac OSX – or on a PC, you have installed a full version of Adobe Acrobat (not just the reader). Taxes, bills, receipts, contracts, certificates… everything. Then I catalog them on a hard drive and can instantly retrieve them when needed.
