career roundtable content

by t on June 25, 2009

It was a privilege to host a free career roundtable in NYC yesterday. We had a few dozen people, five job search mavens and a wealth of quality conversation. Dance Times Square was a perfect and generous venue. We also had a lot of fun reviewing the beauty of the Cards Of Change campaign.

Here was the key content/agenda items – most of which I’ve linked to details found elsewhere in this content database…

job hunting ideas:

- do what you are
- jack of one (or two) trades
- it’s who you know
- points of familiarity
- elevator speech
- short storytelling: the CAR
- online reputation management
- nice parachute (what color is your parachute – get your dream job)

job hunting summary:

know what you want
know what they want
tell everybody

resume ideas:

- resume bible (there isn’t one, no rules)
- resume as “the ad” for you
- a european meal (not too little, not too much)
- differentiators (adding #’s, unique tactics, etc.)
- points of familiarity
- duh (take out the obvious stuff)
- customize, customize, customize
- it’s who you know

resume summary

honesty
brevity
tease them
find connections/things familiar
customize
