things learned from tom kelley

Posted on | June 18, 2009

Tom spoke at PromaxBDA today. He’s such a wonderful, enthusiastic geek. New book just came out. Two concepts stuck with me:

The concept of “vuja de” – to see things with fresh eyes. He loves the role of the anthropologist – the listener and the watcher who sheds all experience and bias and just observes. He said when you have vuja de, you can learn a LOT and find the extraordinary in the ordinary.

“The magic number 7 plus-or-minus 2″ – how many items/concepts people can identify at one time. Funny how when there are 8 objects on the table you have to count them – versus when there are only 7 you can just call it. He said he’s heard that the smarter you are, the more you can identify – hence the +/-.
