best web encyclopedia

by t on March 11, 2005

Want to find common information fast? While you haven’t consulted the 29 volumes of Britannica or World Book for decades, the web hasn’t actually held a porthole for one-stop similar information. Sure, About.com has survived the bubble, and simply guides users through most common subjects, with a personal touch. But when seeking info on countries (with maps), famous people (with pictures), famous events, plants, animals or things – you still had to hit the paid services of the legacy encyclopedia publishers.

Wikipedia is a near-ideal web encyclopedia. It is build on the technology of a wiki, which is a website that allows for more than one author to get approved postings… kinda like watching a book go through new editions on a daily basis by hundreds of authors. When you add the incorporation of web technology, every-other word becomes clickable to a new section that allows you to dig-down to find exactly the information you’re looking for. I’ve learned the history of the Isreali-Palestinian conflict in only a few short work hours.

Apparently, Wikipedia is now a trusted, high-traffic destination. so much so, that when you Google most famous names, Wikipedia comes up within the first few links. Holla!
