“The Profile Survey”
How do you engage with integrity and instill a sense of intimacy with a big audience? At an event we produced last October, I noticed a few smart, simple aspects that truly changed audience perception. Here is a tactic to perhaps employ yourself.
Query the audience using a cost-effective online survey tool (here’s one, and here’s another). Have a well respected senior manager send an email to each employee (non-spam-style) asking for their participation. Make sure you don’t ask for identifiable information – keep it anonymous. But ask atypical questions that are even non-business related – things that most people love to answer: How many kids do you have? What is your favorite sport to watch? What is your dogs name?
Compile the answers and see what you’ve got – and then create a fun, dynamic means of presenting the results. By presenting the results one at a time… “We are parents of 346 children and 31 grandchildren.” “We have 4 dogs named Butch.” “22 of us are soccer coaches.”
You’ve now identified the individuals in the audience! When a stat that includes them comes up, their inner voice cries “that’s me!” And now you’ve made your audience feel identified as an individual, feel closer to one another, feel part of the whole – and feel that they are bonded in whatever communication may be delivered to them next.
